self esteem and self image is affected when thinning hair and baldness starts to happen in either men or women. Since society accepts it more often it is less of a problem for men. Hair loss for men is more of a natural occurrence. Although we may not want to hear it, about 50% of us by the age of 50 are experiencing some sort of hair loss. For women it is looked at completely different.You have heard of male patter baldness because it is very common, there is cure and it is usually inherited, passed from one generation to the next. While there is no absolute cure, it can be slowed down considerably with some medications. In this article we are just going to discuss the WHY part of the puzzle.One medical condition for losing hair is called Alopecia. More females get this than men, but it can happen to either sex and at any age.Several different variations of alopecia:Androgenic Alopecia: Commonly called MALE PATTERN BALDNESS. Usually it is passed from one generation to the next and please note, this can also effect women. If you have this there are some medications that can slow down the loss of hair process. Check out minoxidil (Rogaine) applied to the head and hair, and there is medication you ingest containing finasteride (Propecia), some have had success with natural products such as saw palmetto and beta-sitosterol.Alopecia Areata: This ia a more random patchy loss of hair, it can hit a miss different areas of the head. You will find this more often in teenagers, and young adults. than older people. Usually this is a temporary loss of hair, triggered by hormone changes, such as in young adults and pregnant women. While very embarrassing it is usually less than a year before the hair returns.Alopecia Totalis: This condition usually starts and does not stop until all hair on the head is gone.Alopecia Universalis: This condition could cause complete loss of all bodily hair.Telogen Effluvium: usually cause by certain medications, this is a thinning of the hair. It can cause thinning or lose of all bodily hair. Usually this only lasts for a few months. You may be carefull of some of the medications you are taking.Hair Loss due to Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy, caused by treatment for cancer. This is a side effect from the cancer treatment. Many doctors suggest wigs until the hair returns.Hair Loss due to Hairdressing Chemicals and Treatments. Hair straighteners and hot curling irons can cause hair to become brittle and break off. This is usually not long term, when the chemicals or processes stop the hair returns.Does Hair Color Make a Difference? Doctors have proven that people with red hair have fewer hairs that people with brown hair. The thickest hair is natural blond, they are said to have 25% more hair thank people with brown hair.Hair Loss in Children. Some children suffer from alopecia areata that was mentioned above. There is treatment for this, you should see a dermatologist. Children may also loose hair due to a trauma on the scalp. Some parents thinking it helps hair to grow faster may keep the hair pulled back tight, however over long periods of time this may cause hair loss. More common is a infection called tinea capitis, this can affect even the eyebrows and eyelashes. You should see a doctor quickly about this.

As new medications hit the market this problem will only get worse. Medications for anti-depressants, blood thinners and anti-cholesterol and even birth control pills for women.3. Genes – Hair follicles die and it is inherited by men and women. While it is more common in men a generic thinning happens to about 15% of women.4. Stress – Any thing traumatic that happens to the body can cause hair growth to slow or fall out early. If the stress stops many times the hair will return.5. Illness – there are medical conditions that are known to cause hair loss such as diabetes or thyroid disturbance> you loose hair because the body is under stress.6. Hair damage – usually happens more to women, but hot hair blowers, curling irons, hair dyes, bleaching and we could go on. These all cause hair to be brittle and damaged.7. Dieting – Extreme diets, iron deficiency, unbalanced weight loss, loosing weight to fast can all effect the hair growth. It goes back to why your mother told you, you are what you eat and if you do not eat your body can not repair itself.
