Are you putting this in your Mouth?

Have you ever tried to completely stop smoking cigarettes? If so, I am sure you know from experience, just how difficult it is to truly drop the habit. For most people it will usually require two or three attempts to stop smoking. Knowing that should help keep you from getting depressed if you aren’t successful the first time. My experience helping many patients gives me a lot of knowledge about this problem. You will poser to quit smoking may not be enough to stop. My past experiences is why I now want to start helping others and I know this is the best way to reach a broad range of people that need help with this habit. To get started here are five tips:

1. If you have your favorite brand of cigarettes you will never quit. So the first thing to do is destroy all your cigarettes. Now you know you will just have to have one here and there, so go buy the worst tasting, most disgusting cigarettes you can find. At least in your mind you will have something close by. When you get them home you have one more thing to do. If they are easy to get to even bad tasting cigarettes are still a problem. You need to place them some place that will force you to take some time to get them. Place one here and one there. I had a patient wrap each one in saran wrap and place them out of site. He promised he would not keep them on his person. This process was a great success for him. Most every time he wanted one the urge passed by the time he found one and got it unwrapped. Make having a cigarette as difficult or awkward as possible, this will be different for each person. But if you do decide to take a smoke you will suck in a disgusting taste and your mind will not like it. You are removing some of the pleasure.

2. You need a support person. Just like there are AA mentors you need to find a mentor to help you stop smoking. Find someone that can be tough and honest when it is needed. If this person lives with you that is even better. If you can find someone that had the same cravings as you and has won the fight this person is GOLD.

3. Keep something close that you can put in your mouth; something to chew on or suck on. Get something in your mouth when you get the urge, maybe a piece of candy or chewing gum. Imagine sticking a piece of candy in your mouth while you unwrap the cigarette you found.  Now your mind is already remembering how bad it tasted last time and may rather keep the candy for a bit, maybe long enough for the urge to pass.

4. Analyze your association; do they all smoke? If so maybe you need to seek out new friends. Being around them is like a alcoholic going in to a bar. Why would you want to do that to yourself? Your will power is only so strong. If everyone at your work takes a smoke break, try taking your break at a different time. Don’t go places where you will find a lot of smokers, the smell is a trigger.

5. More about triggers. Triggers are related to smell, touch, sight and sounds. You need to go around your house and work place and get rid of the ash trays, lighters, matches you have hiding everywhere.  Get your support person to do this with you; this will be very hard for you to do.
